Get Organized - Entrepreneur Finances

This sure beats the Google Docs Spreadsheet we have been using. If you're like us (and the rest of the entrepreneurs and small businesses out there) you've probably been stashing expense receipts in a shoebox and paid invoice amounts...

in a spreadsheet. I've done taxes this way and I must say that it really isn't pretty come the end of the year.

In steps Bootstrap Inc, the makers of an awesome business bookeeping tool - Outright.com. Outright has only been around since June of 2008, yet it already has over 21 million users.  Heck, its free and so why wouldn't 21 million people be using it!

Ultimately, Outright is a tool that imports your income/expense numbers, generates reports to show you where your company stands, and then allows you to get your taxes in order via it's super simple tools. We've only been using it for a little over a month but we've already used most of the features.  Heres what we think so far:

  • Income Reporting - this is a simple tool... nothing like QuickBooks.  For a small company though this is often a great relief!  It allows you to import invoices directly from eBay, Freshbooks or PayPal.  You can also manually enter them.  We've really enjoyed the simplicity.
  • Expense Tracking - it can grab transactions straight from you credit card (no manual entry needed).  It allows you to classify all the expenses into the different categories used on the year end tax forms.  It also allows you to easily generate and send 1099s off to any contractors you might use.
  • Tax Organization - Not too sure how Outright does with taxes... as we haven't used it long enough to require its filing assistance.  From what it looks like, the taxes organization is based around a one man show - perfect for entrepreneurs but bad for the 2 man team we've got going on here.  Alas, we'll probably have to manually manage our numbers at the end of the year.
  • Reports - The reports are simple and easy to read.  Nothing fancy here like you'd find in QuickBooks, but fancy enough to show my wife that yes... we are making money... now can I please buy that extra monitor I've been eyeing?

One shortcoming of the tool, which the software dev team says they may be overcoming in a future release, is that the tax preparation tools are specifically for one man shows (self-employed). Since there are two of us here at GigaVero we can't use the full battery of tax prep tools.

In case you missed it before - Outright is outright FREE!
